Student Art Competition: Open to grades 1st–12th. The artwork should be related to Dr. King, Mahatma Ghandi, Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, human rights, peace, justice, non-violence, diversity or the 2012 LTD Theme: “Community.” Winning artwork will be displayed in the lobby of the Topeka Performing Arts Center from 8am–5pm throughout this week. Each winner’s name will be published in the Topeka Capital-Journal or on-line as print space allows. Student Essay Competition: Open to grades 1st-12th. Essays should be related to Dr. King, Mahatma Ghandi, Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, human rights, peace, justice, non-violence, diversity or the 2012 LTD Theme: “Community.” Each winner’s name will be published in the Topeka Capital-Journal or on-line as print space allows. Student Poetry Competition: Open to grades 5th-12th. Poetry entries should be related to Dr. King, Mahatma Ghandi, Cesar Chavez, Nelson Mandela, human rights, peace, justice, non-violence, diversity or the 2012 LTD Theme: “Community.” Each winner’s name will be published in the Topeka Capital-Journal or on-line as print space allows. Prizes and Recognition: The Art, Essay, and Poetry Competition winners will be recognized at the Phillip V. Ashford, Jr. Stop the Violence Day. First, second, and third place winners will be awarded prizes in accordance with the Competition guidelines. All participants will receive a certificate of participation. Sunday, January 8, 2012: Unity in the Community Day - Musical Festival: A special kick-off program will be held at 4:00 p.m. at El Shaddai Ministries Community Church, 920 SE Sherman Street. Pastor E. T. Watson, III and Pastor Shawn O’Trimble will provide reflections on Dr. King’s legacy. Diverse choirs and soloists from Topeka will provide musical selections. A reception will follow in the El Shaddai Fellowship Hall. Monday, January 9, 2012: Educational Outreach Day § Members of Living the Dream, Inc. will be reading educational enrichment books to various Topeka area pre-school students. § Representatives from the Topeka Fire and Police Department, and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will make presentations at various elementary schools about non-violence, anti-bullying, and social media issues. § The National Park Service will be hosting tours of The Historic John Ritchie House, a stop on the Underground Railroad and the Brown v. Board of Education historical site from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Topeka elementary school students in grades 3rd – 5th. Tuesday, January 10, 2012: Educational Outreach Day § Members of Living the Dream, Inc. will be reading educational enrichment books to various Topeka area pre-school students. § Representatives from the Topeka Fire and Police Department, and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will make presentations at various elementary schools about non-violence, anti-bullying, and social media issues. § The National Park Service will be hosting tours of The Historic John Ritchie House, a stop on the Underground Railroad and the Brown v. Boardof Education Historical Site from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Topeka elementary school students in grades 3rd - 5th. Wednesday, January 11, 2012: Respect for Elders’ Day§ Members of Living the Dream, Inc. will be reading educational enrichment books to various Topeka area pre-school students. § Member of Living the Dream, Inc. will be delivering books and personal care items to various Topeka area senior centers in recognition of elderly citizens throughout the week of January 9-13, 2012. Delivery times and locations will be announced. § Representatives from the Topeka Fire and Police Department, and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will make presentations at various elementary schools about non-violence, anti-bullying, and social media issues. § The National Park Service will be hosting tours of The Historic John Ritchie House, a stop on the Underground Railroad and the Brown v. Boardof Education Historical Site from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. for Topeka elementary school students in grades 3rd - 5th. § The Poetry Competition for students in grades 5th-12th will be held at Westar Energy, Wymore Auditorium, 818 SE Kansas Avenue at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow in the Multipurpose Room. Thursday, January 12, 2012: Youth Day: “Drumming for the Drum Major”§ Members of Living the Dream, Inc. will be reading educational enrichment books to various Topeka area pre-school students. § The Greater Topeka Chamber/Entrepreneurial and Minority Business Development in partnership with Living the Dream, Inc. will be hosting a small business lunch box series: “No Fear Finance 101 for Small Businesses and Non-Finance Professionals: Take Charge in 2012.” This workshop will be held at the Greater Topeka Chamber of Commerce, 120 SE Sixth Avenue, Second Floor, Board Room from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm. Pre-registration is required by January 10, 2012. To make reservations contact Mary Ann Anderson at (785) 231-6000. The cost is $15.00 for the general public and $10.00 for Topeka Chamber members and First Step/Fast Trac graduates. A $5.00 registration discount is applied with a donation of two canned good items. The workshop presenter is Cyndi Hermocillo-Legg, Vice President of Entrepreneurial and Minority Business Development. § Topeka area high school and middle school drum lines will be showcasing “Drumming for the Drum Major” performances at the Topeka Performing Arts Center, 214 SE 8th Street at 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Admission is a $2.00 donation or a personal care item for infants such as baby bottles, socks, bibs, baby powder, body wash, baby wipes, or baby shampoo. These items will be used to benefit the Topeka Chapter of Links to a Bright Beginning Program. Ashford, Jr. Stop the Violence Day § Deputy Chief Terri Moses, Field Services Division, Wichita Police Department will be addressing students about making the right life choices at the Topeka Performing Arts Center, 214 SE 8th Street at 9:00 am. First, second, and third place winners of the 2012 MLK Living the Dream Art, Essay, and Poetry Competitions will be recognized. § Deputy Chief Terri Moses will also be speaking to students at the Capitol City High School at 1:30 pm. § A Community Leadership and Recognition Luncheon will be held at the Ramada Inn, Jefferson Room located at 420 SE Sixth Street at 11:30 a.m. Several corporate leaders will be recognized for their sponsorship. The guest luncheon speaker is Eugene Williams, General Manager, KTWU Channel 11. § Mr. Deric Gilliard, Public Affairs Director at the US Department of Health and Human Services, Atlanta, GA office will be speaking to the female residents at 2:30 pm and the male residents at 3:30 pm at the Topeka Juvenile Correctional Facility. § Representatives from the Topeka Fire and Police Department, and the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will make presentations at various elementary schools about non-violence, anti-bullying, and social media issues. § Members of Living the Dream, Inc. will be reading educational enrichment books to various Topeka area pre-school students. Saturday, January 14, 2012: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship and Awards Banquet § The Scholarship and Awards Banquet will be held at the Ramada Hotel & “Convention Center, Regency Ball Room, 420 SE Sixth Street at 6:00 p.m. Deric Gilliard, author, lecturer, and public affairs director at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Atlanta, GA. Office is the guest speaker. Graduating high school senior scholarship and community awards recipients will be recognized. Ron Gutierrez and VISIONwill provide musical selections. Sunday, January 15, 2012: Religion Day § The Topeka/Lawrence Baptist Ministers’ Union is hosting a worship service at 6:00 pm at the El Shaddai Ministries Community Church located at 920 SE Sherman Street. The speaker is Rev. Jarvis Collier, Pastor of the Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church of Kansas City, KS. Musical selections will be provided by area choirs and musicians. Monday, January 16, 2012: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday and Day of Community Service§ “Whose Dream Is It?” in partnership with Living the Dream, Inc. is sponsoring a free community-wide soup dinner and program in celebration of the King Holiday. The soup dinner starts at 6:00 p.m. followed by the program at 7:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church located at 600 SW Topeka Blvd. The guest speaker is Dr. Myron McCoy, President of the Saint Paul School of Theology in Kansas City. A community mass choir comprised of local churches will provide musical selections. § The Kansas Children’s Discovery Center in partnership with Living the Dream Inc., is hosting a “MLK Dream Makers Community Service Contest.” Middle school students who participate in the Boys and Girls Club of Topeka are encouraged to develop a service project that will impact the lives of persons living within the Topeka community. The winning projects will become the premier Youth Development Outreach Project for the Kansas Children’s Discovery Center located at 4400 SW 10th Avenue. The winners will be announced during the MLK Day of Community Service Celebration at 12:00 p.m. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service -- “Make it a day on, not a day off.” In 1994 Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the King Holiday as a national day of volunteer service. Instead of a day off from work or school, Congress asked Americans of all backgrounds and ages to celebrate Dr. King's legacy by turning community concerns into citizen action. Volunteers come to Harvesters, usually with a food donation of a requested 10 cans of food, volunteer, have the opportunity to watch a video, tour the facility, and youth participate in service learning projects on Monday, January 16th, 2012 for two-hour shifts beginning at 8 AM, 10 AM, 1 PM and 3 PM.
